Siliguri

Today has been shake down day but true to form Paddy and I have failed to do any shaking down. We have been concentrating on looking fabulous for the steam railway dinner tonight and getting the car looking truly local.

The latter is coming on really well but is taking considerably longer than planned. The former is an indisputable success.

Having got the tailor and painters started we went with doc John to visit the Rantong village school who welcomed us with a scarf, a blob on the forehead and a excellent display of dancing by the children. Situated about 5 ft from the Darjeeling Himalayan narrow gauge railway the a performance continued despite the actual passing of a railway. The children were not going to allow anything to stop their performance let alone a huge railway passing feet from where they were dancing. It was really sweet.

Then on up the hill for a picnic and a performance of local dance which was excellent if a little loud. Unsurprising for such talented dancers Paddy and I were asked to participate and duly delighted our adoring new local fans. No photos are available of this performance but it will be talked of in these Gurkha hills for many years to come passed as it has into local folklore.
